By The Side Of The Road
By Sharon Lea
There is this spot
by the side of the road
that I go to in my dreams
where it is peaceful
it is green and beautiful
there are two deer
snacking on grassy tidbits
under an old oak tree
I stop every so often
open the trunk of my car
bring out a checkered blanket
and watch the deer play
They aren't afraid at all
they know everything is okay
we are friends having lunch
under a brilliant blue sky
I eat my own lunch
turkey sandwich and chips
an iced cold coca cola
listening to FM radio
The doobie brothers in the air
I sing my heart out joyfully
poppies dotting the foothills
a sea of such tranquility
Soon the deer trot off
they are not in a rush to leave
it's just time for them to go
for me to keep driving
I fold up the blanket
get in my car still singing
seeing deer in my rear view
I say goodbye to my friends
There is a place I go
where an old oak tree stands
