All I Ask Of You

By Sharon Lea

All I ask my friend is for acceptance
who I am and how I was made to be

I won't hide myself for you my friend
behind any pretense or walls of stone

I gave up long ago doing so for anybody
hiding in shells that leave me suffocating

I am only me, myself for better or worse
my heart is in the right place most times

I am no different than you are my friend
we all fear rejection and being neglected

I will not wear a mask covering my eyes
no camouflage to cover the surgical scars

I know what has gotten me to this point
a road full of potholes and construction

I am no different than you my dear friend
a story to tell to someone who needs it

All I ask my friend is for your acceptance
that God made me as I was meant to be
